A double set of index cards with each students name on a card
As questioning, problem solving, etc. are done by students, the teacher uses the cards to determine who will be called on, who will go to the board, etc. Students understand that the selection is random and they may be called on at any time. If a student is called on they have the option of asking anyone in the class for help if needed.
This activity works well in a whole group setting. Always have each students name on two cards so if their name is called once, they don’t “check out” of the discussion. Alternatives to the index cards can be wooden sticks, etc.
